Doubt about the mind

Dear Devotees,

Hare Krishna. PAMHO. AGTSP. I had a doubt. if we look at this verse

http://vedabase.net/bg/10/22/en1

Krishna says I am the mind.. what does it mean exactly.. ?? Does it mean all our thinking comes from Krishna?

And He says Im Indra.. But we know Indra was envious of Krishna.. ( Ref: Govardhan lila)

So can somebody explain me in a better way

your servant

  • The Verse Translates Like This

Of the Vedas I am the Sama Veda; of the demigods I am Indra, the king of heaven; of the senses I am the mind; and in living beings I am the living force [consciousness].

The Answer: It is an explanation given to the novide who is still in material nature. The verse actually means that "Krishna is the controller" . If you are only considering the Sense organs ; mind is the most powerful hence in this case He is that mind. So it means that if you surrender this mind to Krishna all the senses come under control. Indra is the Leader of the Demi-Gods. In that context Krishna is in the form of Indra who controls all the demi-gods. Thus in any particular species of Life and Form ; the controller of that life form is Krishna Himself.

  • Hare Krishna Prabhu ji...

I read texts on this website...

prabhuji please forgive me if i m hurting u saying that he is one among the other philosophers like Osho Rajnish and all.

see saravan ji... a philosophy cant be go beyond the things we have seen we can percept . coz philosophy is just mental convocations . As Mr. JK Krishnamurti might b a better thinker but at last his senses might also b limited however more than us.

hete in this forum actually we r practicing to surrender unto krishna coz only and only Krishna God Himself can clear any doubt those are beyond our perception..

however by this book we can understand the philosophy of Geeta but we cant follow  without surrendering unnto God..  even one may say that one is surrendered but in he , in real, doesnt know how to surrender..

    .

for example if one may ask for " what is water? how it works? pls teach me"   now u tell him a lot and lot..   but what is the purpose of telling.  it is that he have to drink that water only.   now tell me who is better one know very much details of water but  didnt drink or one who know nothing and drinks.! like that surrender unto Krishna is mandatory if one want to fullfil his thirst of queries about God.

So conversation of krishna and Arjuna  , is just to make people know that surrender unto krishna . But unfortunately we dont know how to!  as well as we r stubborn. says we dnt drink water just tell us abt water and pacify our thirst..

    how is it possible..

    .

Perception of God , is beyond our senses, and by Chanting  Hare krishna hare krishna, krishna krishna hare hare, hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare, u can..

then by reading pastimes of Krishna etc etc.

and prabhu ji again beg ur pardon if i mistakenly blasphem any. Reading books on God and Gods philosophy is good thing but this is not good that one takes subject matter from Geeta and elaborate in his own way and leave Krishna..   and sometimes one find "wow his thinking like geeta , that means he is wiser as krishna" it happens coz some souls are wiser than other by the grace of God but that not means equal to God and His speech..

    .

    hare krishna hare krishna

    krishna krishna hare hare

    hare ram hare ram

    ram ram hare hare

  • Mind is thought waves that rises up and down like the sea waves, and intelligence is there to select or reject from the mind all the thoughts that arises. But both mind and intelligence comes ultimately from the soul. According to your nature, desires and what you see with eyes and how you experience the world creates those thought waves which you call mind. So mind is constantly thinking of something which you don't have control on except if you meditate or focus your mind on for example chanting or something else.

  • Dear Sanjay Prabhuji,

    Hare Krishna,

In the 10th Chapter of the Bhagvad Gita, Arjuna requests Lord to tell him about His glories. Krishna knows that living entities can not understand His complete strength or glory or opulence; He therefore agrees to state only the principal manifestations of His different energies because His energies or expansions or Vibhutis are unlimited.

Knowing Arjuna to be a proper recipient, Lord then went on to talk about His glory.

Lord Krishna is the Supreme controller of this universe who controls the entire universe indirectly through His infinite Vibhutis or shaktis or powers.

When Krishna said that "of the senses I am mind", He meant that He resides within all the Jivas in the form of mind so that He can control the senses. Senses are subordinate to the mind. It is the mind which controls the senses and this mind is the 'vibhuti' or a partial expansion of Lord. Thus, it is through the mind that Lord controls the senses. Because of Lord's presence in the mind in the form of deities, He gives us the power to think. However, it is up to us to use this facility of Lord responsibly.

And when Lord says that I am Indra among the demigods", He means that, in the form of a partial expansion (Indra), Lord controls the demigods or deities. Indra is a post. During Brahma's 12 hour day, 14 Indras reign and die. Further, being an expansion of Lord does not mean that the expansion does not have any faults and is divine like Krishna. Partial expansion means they have only limited opulence of Krishna - not all! They may have faults also. Also, Krishna maintains enmity towards none and is the friend of all.

I hope that I could explain the meaning in the way that could satisfy you. In case of any further queries, please feel free to ask.

    Your servant.

  • Hare krishna prabhu ji..

devanam asmi vasavah ( in the devataas he is vasavah ( heavenly king)

    indriyanam manas casmi

(Of the senses Krishna is mind)

so indra and mind both are maintainer and controller of respective matters.  And in all verses of this chapter we find it that  in every context   the maintainer, controller personality is Krishna only..

Now if we think we are independent ,then,  by the grace of this chapter we can know  that , not only we humans, even animals, devtaas, mountains, water and all material and spiritual things of all planets are in control of Krishna in different forms.

    .

Indra was in the same delusion that he is independent controller of earthly creatures and got envious of Krishna  but in govardhan leela Krishna taught him and now for the sake of devotees He Himself tell this most perfect information to Arjuna  so after hearing and accepting this subject matter we never get puffed with our independent nature that is actually doesnt exist.

    Hare Krishna Prabhuji. Pamho. Agtsp

Sarvam hi etad Brahma ~ everything is brahman (Mandukya Upanishad 1.2) sarvam khalvidam brahma, Chandogya Upanishad 3.14.1, "All is truly Brahman" . So everything is Krishna in one sense as everything emanating from krishna ( aham sarvasya pravava ) therefore mind is also creation of Krishna. when Krishna says I am mind , its just to show how he is present everywhere and nothing exists independent of him. But that doesn't mean we don't have independent thinking. Mind is basically a faculty of thinking, it is not that mind independently think. We use the mind ( which is subtle matter) to think. But we have to remember mind is also creation of Krishna but we are using it.

When Krishna says he is Indra, it means He is the paramatma dwelling in Indra and therefore Indra is not independent.

This 10th chapter of Gita specially shows how Krishna is connected with this material world, how Krishna exists in everything of this world. This is simultaneous oneness and difference. Just like fragrance is an attribute of flower similarly we are part of Krishna but Krishna exists in everything as source, in that sense Krishna is everything.
