Dear Prabhujis and Mathajis,

Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble obeisances! All Glories to Srila Prabhupada and Gurudev!

This is in conclusion of the previous mails, posting a few of the points from the wonderful class by H.G. Svayam Sphurathy Krishna prabhu, on the constant remembrance of Lord Hari. When Hiranyakashipu asked his son Prahlada, from whom he has learnt about devotional service as his teachers asserted that they have not taught him about it, Prahlada Maharaj replied that unless they smear upon their bodies the dust of the lotus feet of a Vaishnava completely freed from material contamination, persons very much inclined toward materialistic life cannot be attached to the lotus feet of the Lord. When Hiranyakashipu heard this, he became very angry and he started abusing Prahlada Maharaj. From these verses which Hiranyakashipu spoke, from Srimad Bhagavatam 7.5.38 – 48, we can understand the effect of constant remembrance of the Lord.

1.SB 7.5.38

‘Just as uncontrolled senses are the enemies of all yogis engaged in advancing in spiritual life, this Prahlada, who appears to be a friend, is an enemy because I cannot control him. Therefore this enemy, whether eating, sitting or sleeping, must be killed by all means.’

From the above we learn that nobody can conquer a devotee who is in constant remembrance of the Lord.

2.SB 7.5.39-40

‘The demons [Raakshasaas], the servants of Hiranyakashipu, thus began striking the tender parts of Prahlada Maharaja’s body with their tridents. The demons all had fearful faces, sharp teeth and reddish, coppery beards and hair, and they appeared extremely threatening. Making a tumultuous sound, shouting, “Chop him up! Pierce him!” they began striking Prahlada Maharaja, who sat silently, meditating upon the Supreme Personality of Godhead.’

A person with constant remembrance of the Lord does not react to the persons who are opposing him.

3.SB 7.5.41

‘Even though a person who has no assets in pious activities performs some good deed, it will have no result. Thus the weapons of the demons had no tangible effects upon Prahlada Maharaja because he was a devotee undisturbed by material conditions and fully engaged in meditating upon and serving the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is unchangeable, who cannot be realized by the material senses, and who is the soul of the entire universe.’

Any kind of weapon has no effect on the person with constant Hari Smriti.

4.SB 7.5.42

‘Narada muni said : My dear King Yudhishtira, when all the attempts of the demons to kill Prahlada Maharaja were futile, the King of the demons, Hiranyakashipu, being most fearful, began contriving other means to kill him.’

A person with constant remembrance of Lord Hari causes fearfulness amongst the enemies. Hiranyakashipu was such a fearless demon, but he himself became fearful of Prahlada.

5.SB 7.5.43-44

‘Hiranyakashipu could not kill his son by throwing him beneath the feet of big elephants, throwing him among huge, fearful snakes, employing destructive spells, hurling him from the top of a hill, conjuring up illusory tricks, administering poison, starving him, exposing him to severe cold, winds, fire and water, or throwing heavy stones to crush him. When Hiranyakashipu found that he could not in any way harm Prahlada, who was completely sinless, he was in great anxiety about what to do next.’

This shows that the whole material energy could not touch Prahlada Maharaj who was in constant remembrance of the Lord. None of the expansions of the material energy could touch Prahlada. Herein it is also mentioned that Prahlada was completely sinless. We are suffering from miseries because our life is full of sins.

6. SB 7.5.45

‘Hiranyakashipu thought: I have used many ill names in chastising this boy Prahlada and have devised many means of killing him, but despite all my endeavors, he could not be killed. Indeed, he saved himself by his own powers, without being affected in the least by these treacherous and abominable actions.’

This shows the effulgence and power of a person absorbed in constant remembrance of the Lord.

7. SB 7.5.46

‘Although he is very near to me and is merely a child, he is situated in complete fearlessness. He resembles a dog’s curved tail, which can never be straightened, because he never forgets my misbehavior and his connection with his master, Lord Vishnu.’

A devotee on constant remembrance of the Lord is always situated in complete fearlessness.

8. SB 7.5.47

‘I can see that this boy’s strength is unlimited, for he has not feared any of my punishments. He appears immortal. Therefore, because of my enmity toward him, I shall die. Or maybe this will not take place.’

This proves the unlimited strength of a person with constant Hari smriti that the person becomes almost immortal. Hiranyakashipu did so much austerity to become immortal, but here we see that Prahlada became immortal just be constant remembrance of the Lord.

9. SB 7.5.48

‘Thinking in this way, the King of the Daityas, morose and bereft of bodily luster, remained silent with his face downward. Then Shandaa and Amarka, the two sons of Sukraacaarya, spoke to him in secret’.

A person who tries to disturb a devotee with constant remembrance of the Lord, becomes morose.

In conclusion, it is worth remembering the following verse from Vishnu purana:

sa haanis tan mahac chidram / sa mohah sa ca vibhramah
yan-muhurtam kshanam vaapi / vaasudevam na cintayet

If even for a moment remembrance of Vasudeva, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is missed, that is the greatest loss, that is the greatest illusion, and that is the greatest anomaly.

Thank you very much.

Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada and Gurudev,
Vaijayanthimala devi dasi,
