This mail is in continuation of the series -"How to Attain Transcendental Love for Krishna ?", based on Bhagavad Gita class given by our beloved spiritual master HDG Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on verse 4.10, in Penang, West Malaysia, on 16th March 1992.

This mail is in continuation of the series -"How to Attain Transcendental Love for Krishna ?", based on Bhagavad Gita class given by our beloved spiritual master HDG Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on verse 4.10, in Penang, West Malaysia, on 16th March 1992.
In the previous mails we had heard from Gurudev the conditions specified in the first two lines of the verse 4.10 in Bhagavad Gita. Maharaj very lovingly recites the verse and says, 'veeta raaga bhaya krodhaa / man mayaa maam upaashritaah. Now we go to the third line and again in the third line we have to understand - bahavo jnaana tapasaa - these are three words.Bahavo means many people ; jnaana means by knowledge and tapasaa means by austerity. Now Krishna gives us the reward. He says first condition is that we should be without attachment, fear and anger. Then He says - you should be fully situated in Me ; You should take complete shelter of Me. And bahavo means many people in the past, who had this knowledge and had performed this austerity, penance - bahavo jnaana tapasaa putaah - they are purified by that - by jnaana and tapasya - jnaan means knowledge and tapasya means by austerity. mad bhaavam aagataah - they attain My transcendental love. bhaavam means transcendental love ; mad means - My ; aagataah means attain - Very easy you know ? So we do now the third line.
veeta raaga bhaya krodhaa / man mayaa maam upaashritaah / bahavo jnaana tapasaa . (Gurudev sings and devotees repeat after him 5 times with word to word meaning). You understand this ? We must have knowledge and we must have the austerity and how I will tell you. We have knowledge that "Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise." This saying we learnt from the teacher and we were very much attracted to wealth. (laughter). Because we were from a very poor family. So somehow or the other we wanted to grab the wealth and as soon as I knew that early to bed and early to rise makes us wealthy ..I didn't worry about healthy or wise (laughter). Wisdom was completely absent. Health was quite alright and so we didn't worry about it. But I thought wealthy (laughter).. Its quite good I thought. If I can become wealthy, then I can go to bed even at 7 am. So we used to sleep early and wake up early at 4 am for study. We had to study Sanskrit. So grammar was there. It was very difficult and very dry. But we had to do it. So for 2 months, I was going to bed early and waking up early, but there was no wealth at all (laughter). Then I thought - this is useless. So again I came back to my routine. Because I didn't know that if we continue the penance, then definitely wealth is bound to come. Because if you study alright, you will be intelligent, you get a nice job or you will do nice business. Your health will improve. And if at all you go to somebody they will like you and they will give you a job. People don't want to employ monkeys. They want nice person (laughter). I didn't understand that. I thought in two months, I didn't get any wealth and I just left it like that you know. This is our knowledge. But we did not have the austerity. Continuous austerity is required.
We know that early to bed and early to rise is best for devotional service and thats why our mangala arathi is at 4:30 am or 5 am - Whatever it is and we do it daily. This knowledge we have. But unless you perform it ..the penance is required. So Lord has put this condition. You must have knowledge and you must have tapasya. You must have knowledge and realised knowledge - jnaanam and vijnaanam. Otherwise if you don't put that knowledge into practise, then your knowledge is a mental speculation. It doesn't have any meaning at all. Thats why Lord uses these two words. Jnaan is required and tapasya is also required. It is very easy to understand. So now three conditions we have.
1. Without Raaga, Bhaya, Krodhaa
2. Complete Shelter in Krishna
3. Bahavo - many people have this knowledge and do this tapasya

and if we do these, then the result is told in the fourth line of the verse.'
